1927 - 2017

Jacob Carl Schmidt, beloved husband of the late Nora Schmidt, passed away in Lethbridge on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at the age of 89 years.

Relatives and friends were invited to meet with the family at Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Thursday, January 26, 2017 between 7:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M.

The Funeral Service was held at Knox United Church, 4929 - 50 Avenue, Taber on Friday, January 27, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. Burial followed at the Taber Memorial Garden.

Jack is survived by the love of his life Patsy Klima and her family as well as his six children Garry (Danielle) Schmidt of Lafleche, Saskatchewan and family Luke (Leanne) Schmidt, Sarah (Kevin) Ball, Jesse (Michelle) Schmidt and Christa Schmidt; Brad (Fleurette) Schmidt (Anna Sauce) of Taber and family Kristi Schmidt and Dustin Schmidt; Karen (Zoni) Kover of Taber and family Blair (Dawn) Kover, Jason (Shantana) Kover and Brandon (Tyne) Kover; Bonna LaBrecque (Del Faucher) of Madden and family Coralee (Chad) Hoskins, Tricia Coutts (Brett Langhofer) and Dakota Knight; Jim (Jhoanna) Schmidt of Calgary and family Kelsi Schmidt, Kiara Schmidt, Kaitlin Schmidt, Kaden Schmidt and Khody Schmidt; Brenda Jensen of Blackfalds and family Tyrel Jensen, Jared Jensen (Kyra Wilkins) and Colten (Freya) Jensen as well as thirty two great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Violet Wilson, twin brothers Larry (Caroline) Schmidt, Leonard (Verna) Schmidt and by numerous nieces, nephews and relatives.

He was predeceased by his wife Nora Schmidt, granddaughter Marissa Christensen, parents Herman and Emilia Schmidt, three sisters, two brothers and in-laws.

Jack was born on March 9, 1927, in Markinch, Saskatchewan, one of nine children born to Herman and Emilia Schmidt.

On June 5, 1948, Jack married Freida Schmunk and together they raised their six children, Garry, Brad, Karen, Bonna, Jim and Brenda on their family farm in Fincastle. Later in life, Jack married Nora Hall on November 30, 1972 and together they started NJ Herefords. Jack became a purebred cattle breeder, recognized by the Canadian Hereford Association and produced several grand champions bulls.

Jack’s senior years were some of the happiest of his life, spent with his best friend and love of his life Patsy, attending dances and jam sessions at the Taber Legion every Sunday. His home continued to be the gathering place for family and friends and he would just lean back in his chair and smile taking in all of his blessings.
