received his wings, graduating with the highest marks
ever attained up to that point. He received his

also did brushcutting west of Innisfail. This is where
he would meet his future wife Doris Hillman, an RN

music with his family. Many of those hours with kids
and grandkids on his knee or on the bench alongside
him. Many Sunday nights were spent at the family
farmhouse with Wyman and his siblings playing up a
storm, which also involved huge bowls of popcorn and
fudge. He also maintained his flying skills and passed
on his love of flying to his kids. After retiring from
farming, Wyman and Doris resided in Burdett where he
kept himself busy with projects in his woodworking
shop.
The Funeral Service will be held at the Burdett United

daughters Eleanor Cleland (Luke Naydiuk) and
Jennifer (Roger) Penner; four sons Del (Vicki), Owen
(Cynthia), Stuart (Arlene) and Cam (Susan); sixteen
grandchildren Jordan (Jody), Troy (Leanne), Kirsten
(Steve), Brooke (Ryan), Kelan, Jasmin (Carey), Brynn,
Cayle, Taren, Colyn, Sydney, Carson, Mack, Austin,
Kale, Ty; six great grandchildren Lauren, Nicholas,
Brannon, Hailey, Caydin and Makaya. He is also
survived by his brother Ralph (Jean) Cleland;
sisters Lyla (Jim) Mitchell, Verna (Cliff)
Castiglioni and a brother-in-law Cyril Richards.
Walt was predeceased by his mother and father May
and Albert Cleland, oldest sister Marjorie Richards,
his brother Ray Cleland and his infant daughter.
Walt was born October 24, 1925 and raised in the
Porcupine Hills north of Cowley and met the love of
his life Norma Simpson while attending high school
in Pincher Creek. He spent his entire working life
involved in agriculture in Pincher Creek, Taber and
Bow Island areas. In 1962 he moved to Bow Island to
develop a vision of his business, with partners and
friends Bob and Barb Simmons, in a dry edible bean
business, along with a farming operation. The bean
business started as Island Seed Industries with a
few hundred acres of production, and today has grown
to 50,000 acres, two processing plants and
production marketed throughout the world. His
farming career lasted twenty plus years and involved
all of his sons. It also involved him in many
agriculture industry boards, mainly in bean
production as President of Alberta Pulse Growers and
Western Canadian Pulse Growers.
His life away from work revolved around his
children, who were all very active in sports, his
music which involved singing and harmonica playing,
dancing and service to his community. He managed and
coached many hockey and ball teams, and spent many
years umpiring ball and was involved in Alberta
baseball as Commissioner, Vice President, President
and Past President. He was also involved in the
Alberta Baseball Umpires Association for baseball
and slopitch. His coaching highlight was the
Burdett Generals mens slopitch team, which all four
of his sons played on, and their two Provincial
titles and silver and bronze medals at the Slopitch
Nationals. He received many awards for his work
involving sports and was honoured with a Life Time
membership in the Alberta Baseball Association. His
music involved singing as a soloist and in the
United Church choir. Walt and Adrian Stensrud spent
many hours singing and playing harmonica and guitar.
They also had many entertaining nights down at Jim
Wutzke's shop "The Palm Breeze Hotel". His
harmonica playing was also the favorite of the
little grandchildren and great grandchildren as he
would get them dancing up a storm to the
entertainment of all the adults.
In his later life his biggest enjoyment was his
grand and great grandchildren, he spent many hours
playing with them. His camping trips with just
himself and six to eight grandchildren heading out
with the truck and the old trailer for two to three
days were always a miracle to the parents and
lasting memories to Walt and the grandkids. They all
have their stories of those times. In his last
years as he became afflicted with lung disease and
was not able to get around, one of his passions and
mainstays of his days was coffee with the local
coffee crew in Bow Island. Walt made many good
friends and was able to joke with the guys in his
dry humor style, and debate all the problems of Bow
Island and the world at great lengths.
The Funeral Service will be held at St. Andrew's
United Church, 139-2 Ave. West, Bow Island on
Thursday, January 12, 2006 at 1:00 P.M. with
Reverend Sandra McMillan officiating. Interment will

The measure of a man. Not "How did he die?", but "How
did he live?". Not "What did he gain?", but "What did he
give?".... These are the units to measure the worth of a
man, as a man, regardless of birth. Not "What was his
station?", but "Had he a heart?" And "How did he play
his God given part?". Was he ever ready with a word of
good cheer, to bring back a smile to banish a tear? Not
"What was his church?", nor "What was his creed?", but
"Had he befriended those really in need?". Not "What did
the sketch in the newspaper say?", but "How many were
sorry when he passed away?".

ROSS CURSONS
1936 - 2004

Ross Benjamin Cursons, beloved husband of Vivian
Cursons of Taber, passed away in Taber on Thursday,
September 2, 2004 at the age of 68 years after a
courageous battle with cancer.
Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife Vivian
(nee Hansen), his children Rhonda (Gerald) Dumais and
their children Garrett and Janelle of Edmonton, Mathew
(Dianna) Cursons of Moose Jaw, SK, Lorraine Hetke of
McKenzie, BC, and Scott Cursons of Sorrento, BC; his
step-children Richard (Lori) Bruce and their children
Megan and Brendan, and Robert (Angie) Bruce and their
children Madison and Mason, all of Red Deer and Jade
(Kayla) Cursons of Taber. He is also survived by his
brothers Joe (Susan) Cursons of Medicine Hat, Victor
(Judy) Cursons of Barnwell and his sisters Lynne (Bud)
Nelson of Hawarden, Iowa, Sylvia (Ed) O'Brien of
Shaunavon, SK, Esther (Ole) Thronberg of Eastend, SK,
Janice (Eldon) Widdifield of Winnipeg, MB, Susan
Stimson of Medicine Hat and Inez (Art) Dyer of
Edmonton as well as by numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents Frank and Ruth (nee
Schmitt) and by his son Michael.
Ross was born at Eastend, Saskatchewan on August 28,
1936. His education took place at Clay Centre and Avon
schools. He joined the work force at an early age. He
was co-owner of the Shaunavon Esso for a time before
he began farming on the homestead. In the late sixties
he decided to try his fortunes in Alberta where he
found his true love, Vivian. Ross and Vivian were
married on May 30, 1987. In 1988, Ross, Vivian, and
family purchased a half section in the County of
Hoadley, where they raised about one hundred head of
purebred Simmentals and Ranch Cattle. In 1992, they
decided to sell, as Ross was ready to semi-retire.
They purchased an acreage at Bluffton, but couldn't
stay out of the Cattle business. Ross traveled all the
way to Vancouver Island to purchase four Dexter Cows -
a miniature breed of cattle. They eventually grew to a
herd of twenty. In 1997, Ross retired with his family
to Taber, but needing a permanent place for his
beloved Dexters to live, sold the house in Taber and
bought an acreage at Fincastle. Here, he bred the
first herd of Polled Dexters, known far and wide as
Twi-lite Dexters. Eventually, due to illness, Ross
downsized to a smaller acreage on the Red Trail just
east of Taber. Early this spring, Ross and Vivian
decided it was time to move back to town so they sold
the acreage and purchased a home in Taber. Ross loved
the lands he lived on and kept his homes immaculate.
He always managed to surround himself with animals, be
it horses, cattle, dogs or Llamas. His beloved animals
repaid him in kind with their own brand of devotion.
A Funeral Service will be held in Ross' honor at
Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber on
Tuesday, September 7, 2004 at 2:00 P.M. with Reverend
Jim Lochhead officiating. A Graveside Service will be
held at the Spring Valley Cemetery, Eastend, SK at a
later date.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Ross' name
may be made directly to the Taber Hospital Foundation
(Palliative Care Unit), 4326 - 50 Avenue, Taber,
Alberta T1G 1N9. Telephone: (403) 223-4461.
A special thank you goes out to Dr. Wes Steed, Dr.
Holland and staff at both Taber and Lethbridge
Hospitals for their kind and compassionate care shown
to Ross over the course of his illness.

ETHIS CONRAD
1916 - 2004

Ethis Conrad,
beloved wife of Louis Herbert Conrad, was called home
by a loving Heavenly Father on March 5, 2004, after
many years of declining health.
Ethis was born in Taber, Alberta on June 21, 1916, the
5th child of Earl Noble Harding and Ruby Rice Lyons
Harding. As she was growing up, her best friends were
her siblings, and especially her sisters. As a young
woman, she often worked in the homes of families in
the community. At one such home, she met the
brother-in-law of the lady of the house, a handsome,
curly headed young man who soon won her heart. She
married her eternal sweetheart and companion, Louis
Herbert Conrad on March 26, 1937, in the L.D.S. Temple
at Cardston, Alberta. If she had lived for three more
weeks, they would have been celebrating 67 years of
being married. Mom worked hard, along side dad,
through many trials and moves, living frugally and
doing her best to keep her home clean and her family
provided for. She loved to garden, and was an
excellent cook. She also loved to sing, and taught
her children to harmonize in song, as we worked around
the house, or traveled together in the car. They
lived in many communities, as dad's work required,
including Taber, Magrath, High River and Calgary in
Alberta, and Lillooet, Gibsons, and Riondel in B.C.,
leaving many loyal friends behind in each community as
they served the church and their fellow man.
In passing, Ethis leaves behind to mourn, her husband,
Louis, her children Rita (Dale) Lusk of Lethbridge,
Jeanette Cannady of Raymond, Judy (Murray) Craig of
Calgary, Larry (Beryl) of Claresholm, Doug (Wendy) of
Calgary and Burt (Kathi) of Orem, Utah. She also has
25 grandchildren; 43 great grandchildren and one
great-great grandchild. She is also survived by her
siblings Naida (Ken) Walton of Cardston, Fay (George)
Gibson of Boulder, Colorado, Leonard (Alice) Harding
of Calgary, Don (Pat) Harding of Taber and Jesse
Harding of Taber.
She was predeceased by her parents and siblings Delwin
Harding, Thora Maynes, Beulah Conrad, Alene Burgi,
Lela Harding, Madge Harding, Vernon Harding and
Kenneth Harding. Also by her children Mary, as an
infant, and Myrna from polio at age 13 and one infant
granddaughter.
We love you mom, and we will miss you, but we are
happy that you are now pain free, at peace, and
reunited with so many loved ones who went on ahead.
The Funeral Service will be held at the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Taber Stake Centre,
4709-50 Ave., on Tuesday, March 9, 2004 at 2:00 P.M.
with Bishop Ray Gardner conducting. Interment will
follow in the Taber Memorial Garden.
Those who wish to meet with the family may do so at

Monday, March 8 from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. or in the
Relief Society Room of the Church from 12:45 to 1:45
