EDWARDS
1918 - 2008

Alfred Jay Edwards, beloved husband of the late Violet
Edwards, passed away at the St. Michael’s Health Centre
in Lethbridge on Friday, April 4, 2008 at the age of 89
years.
Jay was born in Taber on December 29, 1918 to George
“Jud” and Dora Edwards. He met and later married Violet
in July of 1940. They lived in Taber most of their lives
until Jay retired. While residing in Taber, Jay was
active in the community, serving as President of the
Royal Canadian Legion and also as Fire Chief for several
years. After retiring they moved to Fort Macleod where
he continued his passions which included playing golf,
wood working, spending time with family or holidaying
with Thora & Neil.
Jay is survived by two sons, Garry (Denise) Edwards of
Lethbridge, Rick (Jane) Edwards of Calgary; six
grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and one great
great grandson. He is also survived by two sisters,
Thora (Neil) Garvin of Red Deer, Carol (Herb) MacLean of
Tacoma, Washington; sister-in-law Lenore Edwards of
Cranbrook, brother-in-law Ted Milligan of Red Deer and
by numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife Violet, parents George
and Dora Edwards, sister Rhea Milligan; two brothers Joe
Edwards, Lawrence Edwards and sister-in-law Berti
Edwards.
A private family graveside service will be held at the
Taber Memorial Garden.

may be made directly to the Alzheimer’s Society of
Lethbridge, 402, 740 - 4 Avenue South, Lethbridge,

The family would like to thank all of the staff at St.
Michael’s Health Centre for all their special care and
attention. Also, special thanks to Nancy Van Deurzen of
Hands That Help for the compassion shown over the years
as Jay’s companion; you are a special person and will
always be a part of our family.

ALLAN ELL
1928 - 2007

Allan Frank Ell of Grassy Lake, passed away on Monday,
December 10, 2007 at the age of 79 years.
Allan is survived by his brother Arthur (Arlene) Ell and
their children Randy (Heather), Cindy (Mario Bernhardt)
and Daniel.
He was predeceased by his parents Frank & Irene and
nephew Gerry.
Allan was born in Medicine Hat on November 11, 1928. In
1945, the Ell’s moved to Grassy Lake. Allan farmed with
his dad until 1955, at which time he joined the
Department of Agriculture. Following retirement, Allan
became the Grassy Lake “caretaker”. He was involved in
numerous community activities. As a result of his
dedication and service, a ball diamond was named for
him. Allan was a gentle, caring individual and he will
be dearly missed and remembered for his love of the
community and its residents.

ELLIOTT
1986 - 2007
Blake David Elliott, beloved, precious son of Gary and
Shelley Yates of Bow Island and Dave Elliott of
Lethbridge, passed away suddenly at Brooks on Saturday,
June 30, 2007 at the age of 20 years.
Blake is lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his
parents, his sisters Cassandra (Ryan) Kielstra, Larissa
Elliott (Deven Collins) and his precious niece Alexa &
nephew Cash. He is also survived by his loving
grandparents Helen Miller of Bow Island, Jack Elliott of
Lethbridge and Bill & Delores Yates of Burdett; by many
loving aunts, uncles, cousins; his girlfriend Lisa
Kochis and many friends too numerous to mention.
He was predeceased by his grandfather Robert Miller, his
grandmother Thelma Elliott and a very special cousin
Robert Miller.
Blake was born in Bow Island on August 2, 1986. He
attended St. Michael’s School and Senator Gershaw School
from which he graduated in June of 2004. In grade two,
Blake was so excited because his god-mother, Auntie Nita
was his teacher. He worked at Len’s Foods in Bow Island
during his high school years and gained much experience
there. His special smile made him very popular with the
customers, so much so that he received graduation gifts
from some of the people that he delivered groceries to.
After graduating, Blake moved to Medicine Hat to work
for BJ Services Company Canada and then in August 2006
he started working for Leader Energy Services and had
already been promoted to Service Supervisor. He enjoyed
his job immensely, making many fantastic buddies. Blake
loved all sports with volleyball and golf being his
favorites. The last few years he starting playing the
guitar and with the help of Gavin & Marty became quite
the musician. Blake was so happy to take a few
vacations. In 1995, he celebrated his ninth birthday in
Disneyland with his Mom, sisters and Auntie Vonnie. In
1997, Blake & Larissa went to Florida with his Uncle
Howard, Auntie Anne, and cousins Brock & Lydia. In
February of this year, he had the best time of his life
in Cancun with friends Derrick Lynn, Mark Gravelle and
Ryan Geldreich.
He was a loving, caring son, brother, uncle, grandson,
nephew, cousin & friend to many. Our hearts are broken,
but in our broken hearts, Blake will live forever!
The Funeral Service will be held at the Evangelical Free
Church, 214 - 4 Avenue West, Bow Island on Thursday,
July 5, 2007 at 11:00 A.M. with Civil Celebrant Gerry
Getz officiating. At the request of his family, please
dress casual in memory of Blake.

1984 - 2007

Darren Mark Epp of Lethbridge, passed away on Saturday,
February 3, 2007 at the age of 22 years.
He is survived by his father David Epp of Lethbridge,
mother Lorraine (Bob Jr.) Dykstra of Burdett; brother
Steven Epp of Burdett, step-brother Joel (Barb) Dykstra
of Burdett, step-sisters Sarah (Brad) Winters of Indus
and Liz Dykstra of Langdon; grandparents John and Anne
Epp and Bob and Yvonne Dykstra as well as numerous
aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was predeceased by his grandparents George and
Valentine Peters.
Darren was born July 8, 1984 in Taber and was raised in
Vauxhall where he received his education. Following his
school years Darren went to work with his dad on the
family farm. He loved spending time farming with his
dad and he worked alongside him until they sold the
farm. He then worked in the oil field and was looking
forward to training as an excavator operator. Darren
enjoyed fishing and skiing and loved his cat “Buddy”.
Darren will be remembered for his happy-go-lucky,
energetic personality and for being able to do pretty
much anything he tried. One of our most memorable
moments was when Darren was only ten and he started up
the swather and made it catwalk.
Relatives and friends are invited to meet with the

Avenue, Taber on Thursday, February 8, 2007 between 7:00
P.M. and 8:00 P.M.

Wayne Douglas Eide, beloved husband of Cheryl Lamotte of
Taber, passed away quietly at the Taber Hospital on
Saturday, September 9, 2006 at the age of 59 years.
Besides his loving wife Cheryl, Wayne is survived by his
daughter Carol Eide and his son Cory (Sonia) Eide all of
Red Deer; their mother Fern Bunney of Wetaskiwin and by
four grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents Marvel & Helen Eide
and by a son John Eide.
In honour of Wayne’s life, his family will gather for a
time of celebration and private reflection.

1917 - 2006

Mr. Ray Burnell Evanson, beloved husband of Myra
Gwyneth Griffin Evanson of Taber, passed away
peacefully at the Taber Health Care Centre on Monday,
March 20, 2006 at the age of 88 years with his wife of
sixty three years, at his side.
Besides his loving wife Myra, Ray is survived by his
children Linda Maureen (Charles) Burke of Coaldale, R.
Brent (Dorothy Ann) Evanson of Macon, Georgia, John
Charles (Heather) Evanson of Oakville, Ontario, A.
Eric (Ruthie) Evanson of Phoenix, Arizona, Stephen
James (DeRae) Evanson of Lethbridge and Catherine
Louise (Allen) Bird of Willard, Missouri. He is also
survived by twenty four grandchildren, seven great
grandchildren, his sister Ruth Harding of Willard,
Utah and by three sisters-in-law Stella, Rae and
Mildred.
He was predeceased by his brothers Harold, John,
Archie, Richard and by his sisters Edna, Virginia,
Deanna and Eva.
Ray was born in Taber on July 13, 1917 to John and
Hannah Eorun Evanson. He received his schooling in
Taber and completed his police training in Calgary and
Regina. He served with the Royal Canadian Mounted
Police, the S.I.S. of the Canadian Army overseas for
two years on the continent. Upon his return to civil
life, he was employed as Agricultural Superintendent
of Canadian Sugar Factories in Taber, as the Assistant
Director of the Barons Eureka Health Unit and was a
physical education instructor under the Dominion
Provincial Youth Training Program.
As a loyal and dedicated citizen of the Town of Taber,
he served in many capacities including on the Sugar
Beet Board, he was a past president of the Kiwanis
Club, he served as Red Cross and Water Swimming Safety
President, as a member of the Taber Public School
Board for eighteen years (twice as chairman), he
served on the Taber Hospital Board, the Taber Rodeo
Committee and the Taber Museum Committee. He was Padre
of the Taber Legion, vice-chairman of the Oldman River
Regional Planning Commission, as chairman of the Taber
Foundation Board which administered Clearview Lodge,
Harmony Home, Pioneer Place and Homestead Manor, he
served on the committee which established Parkside
Manor, he organized the Taber Thrift Shop, served on
Taber Town Council, was a member of the Parkside
Seniors and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion.
He also organized the Taber Native Drop-in Centre and
instituted the Taber Meal-on-wheels program. Taber
truly was his home.
First and foremost however, he was totally dedicated
to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and
during his lifetime he served in the following
capacities - as Bishop, First Stake President of the
Taber Stake, Mission President for three years of the
Southern States Mission, as Regional Representative,
he spent twenty seven years as Stake Patriarch and
also served on various boards and other
positions.
Ray was a great leader in all areas and his prime
interest was his family whom he loved dearly and they
in return loved him.

to 8:00 P.M. and at the church prior to the service

PAUL EDLUND
1923 - 2005

Paul David Warren Edlund passed away in the Bow Island
Health Centre on Tuesday, November 8, 2005 at the age
of 82 years.
Paul was born July 25, 1923 in Artesia, California to
Nels and Anna Edlund.
Predeceased by his loving wife Elna in 2001, Paul is
survived by children Lauren (Jane) of Dublin, Ireland
and their children Aaron (Inga) of Taber, Amanda and
Brant of Ireland; Laura Lee (Bob) Van Tol of Bow
Island and their children Chelsea of South Korea,
Michael and Julien of Bow Island; Cynthia (Owen)
Cleland of Bow Island and their children Kirsten
(Steve) of Magrath, Brooke (Ryan) of Medicine Hat and
Kelan of Medicine Hat; Morgan (Lisa) and son Alan of
Medicine Hat. Paul had a special place in his heart
for his great grandchildren Brannon, Hailey, Caydin,
Makaya, Treydon and Olivia.
"We are each
of us angels with only one wing; and we can only fly
embracing each other."
Paul will be
reunited with his wife Elna, infant son Douglas and
son Randolph who passed away in 1987.
Paul will be fondly remembered by sister-in-law Leona
Weeks and nieces and nephews Mel Edlund, David Edlund,
Gerald Edlund, Bev Hadlington, Marilyn Kirk, Val
Werner, Bill Green, Betty Ann Kolody, Del Peterson,
Rick Peterson, Karen Lanser and their spouses and
families as well as family friends Connie Edlund and
Ken and Grace Jesse. He is also survived by family
members in Sweden.
Paul was a Veteran of WW11 serving as a member of the
Canadian Grenadier Guards from January 1942 until
discharge in March of 1946. Returning from overseas
Paul spent his working years farming in the Burdett
area and "lived to Ride" his Harley when there was
time. His family was the most important thing to him
and he enjoyed his time with each and every one of
them.
"To
live in hearts we leave behind is not to die. Until we
meet again."
A Private
Family Graveside Service will be held in the Burdett
Community Cemetery. It was Paul's request to be
interred in the Edlund family plot with his wife Elna
and their sons.

SAM EDWARDS
1932 - 2005

Mr. Samuel Hubert Edwards, beloved husband of Mrs.
Yvonne Edwards of Taber, passed away peacefully at the
Taber Hospital on Sunday, August 7, 2005 at the age of
72 years.
Besides his loving wife Yvonne, Sam is survived by his
children Ruth (DeWayne) Holman, Brad Edwards, Barbara
Edwards and by his grandchildren Dustin, Tyler,
Shantelle and Clint Holman.
Sam was born October 8, 1932 in Goulburn, NSW,
Australia. In 1953, he immigrated to Canada with his
family. Here, he met and married the love of his life,
Amy Yvonne Wright. He was an active member of The Church
of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. One of his
greatest joys was fulfilling a dream when he purchased a
farm near Taber where he was able to farm using his
beloved Clydesdales.

SHARLENE ELL-VOELLER
1962 - 2005

It is with great sadness that we say good-bye to our
dear wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend,
Sharlene, who passed away suddenly on February 26,
2005 at White Rock, BC.
Sharlene will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered
by her husband, Fred and her children Kole Phillip and
Miah Mae. She is the beloved daughter of Phillip and
Josephine Ell, adored sister of Calvin (Patty),
Marilyn (Arnie) and James (Laura), special Aunty to
her nieces and nephews and friend to many. Sharlene
will also be forever remembered by her mother-in-Law,
Marjorie Voeller and her sister-in-law Colleen
(Michael) and brother-in-law Todd (Stephanie).
Sharlene was predeceased by her grandparents, Rochus &
Luvella Ell and Adam & Berga Fettig and her
father-in-law, Mike Voeller.
Sharlene was born October 5, 1962 in Taber, Alberta
and grew up on the family farm near Grassy Lake,
Alberta. She graduated from St. Michael's School in
Bow Island and then went on to get her Bachelor of
Education degree from the University of Lethbridge.
Fred and Sharlene were married July 9, 1988 and
shortly after they moved to White Rock, BC, where she
resided until her passing. Sharlene worked at various
jobs over the years, including Softball City until the
birth of their children. Sharlene was a very loving,
caring and devoted wife and mother. She was the heart
of her family home where she looked after not only
Fred and their children, but also her "adopted family"
of Craig and Corey. She will be greatly missed by her
loving family and her many, many friends.

1935 - 2005

Mrs. Mary Engwer of Taber, beloved wife of the late
Mr. Ed Engwer, passed away in Taber on Thursday,
January 6, 2005 at the age of 87 years.
Mary was born on September 5, 1917 in Alsask,
Saskatchewan. She married Ed on August 26, 1935 in
Saskatoon. They moved to Taber in 1948 to open a 5
cent to $1 store, later known as Steadmans, retiring
in 1976. Mary and Ed taught dancing in Taber and
surrounding area for many years.
Mary will be sadly missed by her two daughters Marilyn
(Roy) Elmer of Vulcan and Reta Emes of Taber; two
sons Ed Engwer of Sundre and Norman (Connie) Engwer of
Taber; seven grandchildren Warren (Tina) Elmer of Pitt
Meadows, B.C., Ken (Kelli) Elmer of Ladner, B.C.,
Shannon (Margie) Emes of Lethbridge, Terry (Lynelle)
Emes of Vauxhall, Brian Emes of Lethbridge, Nick
Engwer of Taber and Jennifer Engwer of Taber and
twelve great grandchildren, including two sets of
twins.
Mary was predeceased by her husband Ed in 1996, her
parents, a brother, a sister and a great
granddaughter.

KARIN ECKLUND
1906 - 2004

Mrs. Karin Linnea Ecklund of Taber, beloved wife of
the late Mr. George Ecklund, passed away peacefully on
Monday, March 29, 2004 at the age of 97 years.
Karin is lovingly remembered by her children, Evelyn
Whittaker of Kelowna, B.C., Inez Anderson of Taber,
Verna (Keith) McCulloch of Taber, Shirley (Bob) Glover
of Kyle, Saskatchewan, Glen (Marlene) Ecklund of
Cranbrook, B.C., Lorne (Diane) Ecklund of Stettler,
Garry (Gail) Ecklund, Leroy (Fran) Ecklund of Taber
and Dennis (Joanne) Ecklund of Ponoka. She is also
survived by her sister Violet Travalia and brother Art
Valin of Lethbridge, son-in-law Carl Thompson of Peace
River, along with 33 grandchildren, 58 great
grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren and many
nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband George, infant son
Norman Lloyd, two daughters Vivian Thompson and Norma
Crockford, four sons-in-law Joseph Crockford, Frank
Summers, Siegfred Anderson and Gerald Whittaker and a
granddaughter Cindee McCulloch.
Karin was born in Mora, Sweden on August 13, 1906 to
Olof and Kirsten Valin and immigrated to Canada in
1910 along with her three siblings. The Valin family
settled in the Brownlee, Saskatchewan district. Karin
and George lived all their married life farming in the Riverhurst area until 1974, when they sold the farm
and moved to Taber. They celebrated their 50th
Anniversary that year. Her husband passed away in
October of 1974.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Beckie and the staff of
Taber Extendicare for the wonderful care they provided
Karin during the last months of her life.

FRANK ELL
1923 - 2004

Mr. Frank Ell, beloved husband of Mrs. Loaine Ell of
Taber, passed away on Tuesday, February 10, 2004 at
the age of 80 years.
Frank was born at Grassy Lake, Alberta on April 13,
1923, the son of John and Frances (Klein) Ell. He
was raised in Grassy Lake and received his education
at Fettig school. He married Loaine Liddle on
December 27, 1944 and they had three children.They
moved to Bow Island where he worked with the County of
40 Mile, later becoming Superintendent and moving to
Foremost. During their time in Foremost, Frank
undertook multiple business ventures including Frank
Ell Construction which began in 1969. Frank and Loaine
then returned to Bow Island where they resided several
years before buying an acreage east of Taber. They
eventually moved to the Town of Taber where he worked
for the MD of Taber.
Besides his loving wife Loaine, he is survived by his
children Cheryl (Dave) Garner of Barnwell, Verle
(Valerie) of Edson and John (Darla) of Cochrane; eight
grandchildren Del, Wayne, Cara, Laura, Lisa, Brad,

Friday, February 13, 2004 at 7:00 P.M.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Augustine's
Catholic Church (5009-48 Ave.) Taber on Saturday,
February 14 at 10:30 A.M. with Father Mariusz Sztuk
SDS celebrant. A family Interment to follow in the
Taber Memorial Garden.

TERRY ELL-NELSON
1928 - 2004

Mrs. Theresa (Terry) Ell-Nelson, beloved wife of the
late Paul Nelson and Tom Ell, passed away suddenly
in Bow Island on Wednesday, January 7, 2004 at the
age of 75 years.
Terry was born on January 12, 1928 at Prelate,
Saskatchewan to Matthias and Angelina Schall. Terry
had resided in Bow Island, Alberta for the past 58
years. She had always given fully of herself in
whatever she had been involved with. Throughout her
life she was kept very busy looking after her
family, growing a spectacular garden every year,
volunteering on many different committees, boards
and projects in her community and she was always
very active in her church as well.
Terry will be sadly missed and forever remembered by
her children Geraldine (Jim) Kirkman of Irma,
Alberta and Cyril (June) Ell of Bow Island, Alberta,
daughter-in-law Cheryl Ell of Calgary, Harvey
(Kelly) Nelson, Howard Nelson and Evelyn (Jason)
Cutts all of Calgary; grandchildren, Terry-Lynn
(Lee) King of Irma, René (Blair) King of Red Deer,
Christopher (Shelly) Kirkman of Sylvan Lake, Nicole
Ell of Lethbridge, Kristian Ell, Michael Ell of
Calgary, Ryan Ell of Bow Island, Matthew, Sean,
Erik, Kevin, Bradley and Paula Nelson all of
Calgary; great-grandchildren Riley and Landon King
of Irma, Carson and Avery King of Red Deer, Kaiden
and Halle Kirkman of Sylvan Lake; mother Angelina
Schall of Medicine Hat; brothers Pete (Betty) Schall
of Victoria, BC. and Earl (Lucille) Schall of
Medicine Hat. Terry will also be missed by her
numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was predeceased by her father Matthias Schall,
first husband Tom Ell, her second husband Paul
Nelson, her son Daryl Ell, brothers Bill and Joe
Schall and her sister Velva Reber.
Relatives and friends are invited for Prayers at St.
Michael's Catholic Church (1st Street East) Bow
Island on Sunday, January 11, 2004 at 7:00 P.M.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Michael's
Catholic Church on Monday, January 12, 2004 at 11:00
a.m. with Reverend Father Thomas Vadassery
celebrant. Interment will follow in the Bow Island
Cemetery.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Terry's
name can be made directly to the Bow Island Hospital
