MARGARET JANZ
1923 - 2010

Margaret Janz, beloved wife of the late Jacob Janz of Coaldale, passed away in Lethbridge on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at the age of 86 years.
Relatives and friends are invited to meet with the family at the Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Friday, July 16, 2010 from 8:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M.
A private family burial service will be held at the Coaldale Mennonite Cemetery prior to the funeral service on Saturday, July 17, 2010.
The Funeral Service will be held at the Vauxhall Mennonite Brethren Church, 320 - 9 Street North, Vauxhall on Saturday, July 17, 2010 at 2:30 P.M. with Pastor Elroy Senneker officiating.
Margaret Janz was born August 29, 1923, to Peter and Helena Martens in Alexanderwohl, Ukraine. Immigrating to Canada in 1925, the family settled on a farm in Coaldale. In the spring of 1935, she yielded to God’s tug on her heart and accepted Him as her personal Savior. Playing piano for the choir under the direction of Jacob Janz, eventually led to their marriage on August 29, 1943. The next years were spent farming, attending the Mennonite Brethren Bible College (1946-1948), then moving to a farm in Vauxhall where they lived for the next fifty three years. These years were filled with rearing six children, overseeing vegetable and flower gardens, hoeing sugar beets, tending chickens, canning, sewing quilts for home and others, multiple handicrafts and needle work, playing piano and later organ at church, teaching piano to myriads of students and writing letters to loved ones. Margaret had always wanted to write her life-story, so she began a few years ago and last year she finally held the published book in her hands - “Come Walk With Me”. Due to her failing health, they moved back to Coaldale in January of 2007. Jacob died last year, and Margaret moved into the Sunny South Lodge which she has thoroughly enjoyed. Margaret’s zest for living, strong family and friendship bonds, love of beauty and music, and faith in her God underpin her life. She was truly a treasure from Him.
Margaret is survived by her children Marjorie Janz of Sydney, Australia; Eleanor (Sam) Petkau of Chilliwack; Vera (Dwight) Nickel of La Glace; Irene (Henry) Hamm of Grande Prairie; Ben (Ethel) Janz of Vauxhall; Alf (Martha) Janz of Kelowna; eighteen grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, one brother, one sister and many friends.

Some of his favorites being teaching Early Morning Seminary, Sunday School Gospel Doctrine teacher, Stake Sunday School President, Stake High Councilman and Bishop’s Counselor. He loved and understood the scriptures and quoted from them verbatim. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Denmark from 1963 - 1966. Upon his return from Denmark, he married his childhood sweetheart Lester Ann Hyde. They enjoyed 43 1/2 happy years together and look forward to sharing eternity.
Gayle’s life work was in the hospitality and travel industry. With Thomas Cook Travel and later with his own Travel Agency, he and Lester Ann enjoyed traveling to many amazing and exotic areas of the world. Gayle loved people and his list of friends reaches around the globe. Later he worked for or owned hotels, one of his favorites being the Prince of Wales in Waterton. He loved the beauty of Waterton and thoroughly enjoyed his association with all the young people who worked with him. His passion was sports. If you could throw it, catch it, hit it or kick it, he played, watched, refereed or umpired and loved every minute. Gayle was a
walking source of sports trivia. When he realized that his illness would limit his time with us, his wish was to live to see the Super Bowl yet again. Now he will see it from the best seat in the house. Gayle traveled many miles to watch everything from his three year old granddaughter’s soccer practice to his son’s participation in the Canadian Slowpitch finals last summer. He had a fierce love of family, immediate and extended. Gayle loved his children and grandchildren. Although they will miss him, they all have many happy memories of their Dad and Papa.

She loved her extended family dearly and was often on the phone talking to a cousin, niece or nephew as well as her children and grandchildren. She will be missed by her family and many friends. Lela was proud of her Irish heritage and always had this Irish Blessing visible in her home (it also says a lot about the kind of person she was).

May the road rise up to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face
And the rains fall soft upon your fields
And, until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Walter and his wife Connie spent about fifteen years in Phoenix, Arizona during the winter. His most favorite activity while being away was constantly shopping the “flea markets”.
Walter was always known as “The Friendly Giant”. He was known to go up to total strangers and chat for hours if possible. He could and sometimes did, give to others whenever he was able. Walter was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He loved family reunions for both his and Connie’s sides of the family. He loved to visit his friends and relatives any place and at any time. He loved his family most of all and gave to all of them to “the extreme”. Walter was a man who did it all “My Way”.
Walter will be missed by family and friends but we rejoice in the Lord that he is in a better place, free of pain. We love you and will see you again one day.
Relatives and friends are invited to meet with the family in the Relief Society Room of the Church prior to the service from 11:00 A.M. to 12:40 P.M. on Tuesday, January 15, 2008.

If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Walter’s name may be made directly to the Edith Cavell Care Centre, 1255 - 5 Avenue South, Lethbridge, Alberta  T1J 0V6 or to the charity of one’s personal choosing.
The family would like to thank Dr. Cal Stewart, the nurses and staff at the Edith Cavell for their loving and wondrous care that Walter received during his stay there. Many, many thanks goes out to all who have shown their love and concern for Walter and his family.
