Like many persons in the depression years, she only graduated from an elementary level. She did however further her education taking night school classes in typing, cake decorating, sewing, hair dressing, etc. which enhanced the lives of all those around her. With the forced evacuation of the families of Japanese origin from the coast in l942, part of the Okamoto family relocated to the sugar beet fields of Taber. To supplement her income, Haddie worked at the Broder Canning Company for various families as a Mother's assistant. She later retired following many years of loyal and dedicated service as chief cashier with the Taber Food Market and Taber Supermarket (Fong Bros.). Haddie loved sports - fishing the "Crow" in her hip waders, curling, bowling and she enjoyed playing Bingo. She was very avid in all her undertakings. Although Haddie had no children, she was a loving and generous aunt in all ways towards her nieces, nephews and their children and in return was adored by them all. After retirement, she loved to travel with her favourite destinations being Hawaii and Bermuda, though her trips back to Victoria were always nostalgic. They then applied to work at the Taber Hospital and it was during this time that she met Butch. Butch had joined the army during the Second World War and when he was shipped overseas, Brida went back to Sydney and worked there. When Butch was wounded, he was shipped back to Canada on a hospital ship which docked in Halifax, where he was met by Brida and her parents. Butch was then sent by train back to Taber and Brida followed him a short time later. Dad always joked that mom chased him all the way across Canada before she caught him. When Butch recovered from his injuries, he and Brida were married May 23, 1946. Butch and Brida raised five children on the farm just east and south of Taber. When her children were a little older, Brida returned to nursing at the Taber Hospital. Some of those same people that she worked with were with her in her final days and were so kind to her. We can never repay them for their kindness. After they retired, Butch and Brida spent many winters in Mesa, Arizona where they made many friends and enjoyed mild winters. Marie-Luis Anna Ostrop passed away peacefully on July 31, 2006 at age 61 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband Wilhelm Ostrop, her mother Margarete Boenemann-Nordalm, her children and children-in-law Nikola and Volker Hanhoff, Alexander Ostrop and Alison Goodwin, her grandson David Hanhoff and extended family and friends.
