Gladys Zelenka

1922 - 2023

It is with deep sadness that the family of Gladys Margaret Zelenka announce her passing in Taber on Friday, October 13, 2023 at the age of 100 years.

Relatives and friends were invited to meet with the family at Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Tuesday, October 17, 2023 between 7:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M.

The Funeral Service was held at Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Wednesday, October 18, 2023 at 1:00 P.M. Burial followed at the Taber Memorial Garden.

Gladys is survived by her sons Jim (Diane) Zelenka of Taber and Fred (Darlene) Zelenka of Lloydminster and her daughter Cheryl (Ron) Merkl of Taber.

She was predeceased by her husband Richard; parents William and Frances Houdek; stepmother Frances Houdek; seven siblings Blanche, Mildred, Alma, Sylvia, William, Irene and Jane.

Gladys was born in Springwater, Saskatchewan on November 3, 1922. She started her teaching profession in Saskatchewan and moved to Alberta where she met and later married Richard Zelenka in 1952. Gladys continued teaching and taking care of the family while pursuing her love of sewing, gardening, baking, knitting, crocheting and painting. She was a faithful member of the Women of the Moose for over fifty years. Glady’s family grew with the addition of seven grandkids and five great grandkids. Family gatherings were plentiful and mom always made sure everyone was gathered around her table. In 2007 Gladys moved into Clearview Lodge where she was a resident for twelve years. Linden View became her home until the time of her passing. Gladys was a social butterfly, she made friends easily, and she played a mean game of cards. We will forever miss her smile and hugs.

If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Gladys’ name may be made directly to the Alzheimer’s Society, 40, 1202 - 2 Avenue South, Lethbridge, Alberta T1J 0E3 www.alzheimer.ca.
