IRENE PETERSON

1912 - 1999

Irene Peterson, beloved wife of Carl Peterson of Taber, passed away on Sunday, May 30, 1999 at the age of 86 years.
Irene was born the daughter of Simon and Freda Siewert on May 31, 1912 in Fertility, Alberta. Being raised in the area, she attended school up until grade six in the Spondon School House. Irene married Carl Peterson in Lethbridge on January 7, 1948. Irene was well known for her hospitality as she was employed at various restaurants in taber for many years. In her leisure time, she liked to grow flowers, tend her garden, polish rocks, make wedding decorations and listen to the music of Lawrence Welk and Tommy Hunter. She also enjoyed baking for different occasions such as weddings and holidays. She always looked forward to the holidays like Thanksgiving, Easter and New Years but her most favorite time of year was Christmas because it is such a special time for families to gather. Irene loved to travel to B.C. to visit family and life long friends. In her travels she began to collect spoons and pins of different sorts but her most prized possession was her Toy Poodle “Snowball”. Most of all, Irene was fond of her family and grandchildren. She loved to support her grandchildren by following them to their various sporting activities and being a special part of their lives.
Irene will be remembered by her family as a devoted and caring wife, mother, grandmother and sister and will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Besides her husband Carl of fifty one years, she is survived by her children Marlene (Gordon) Peterson of Burdett, Edward Cornell of Toronto, Melvin (Patti) Peterson of Taber, Richard (Deb) Peterson of Foremost, Vernon (Wendy) Peterson of Lethbridge and Ronald Peterson of Taber; a brother Herb (Edna) Siewert of Dugald, Manitoba; sisters-in-law Edith Brunt of Kelowna, British Columbia and Betty Siewert of Burlington, Ontario; a brother-in-law Ivan (Pauline) Peterson of Kelowna, British Columbia; eighteen grandchildren, twenty one great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Irene was predeceased by her parents Simon and Freda Siewert; a daughter Lola Knibb; two brothers, Art and Otto Siewert and two sisters Mary Smith and Adeline Nagle.
Relatives and friends were invited to meet with the family at the Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Thursday, June 3, 1999 from 7:30 P.M. to 8:30 P.M.
The Funeral Service was held at Knox United Church, 4929 - 50 Avenue, Taber on Friday, June 4, 1999 at 1:00 P.M. with Reverend Ken Crassweller officiating. Interment followed at the Taber Memorial Garden.
