FUNERAL SERVICE AUDIO RECORDING

Val Watland

1945 - 2018

Valerie Elona Watland, beloved wife of the late David Watland, went home to be with her Lord and Saviour in Coaldale on Thursday, August 9, 2018 at the age of 73 years.

The Funeral Service was held at Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. Burial was held at the Stettler Cemetery.

Val is loved and remembered by her children Shauna (Arnold) Pauls of Coaldale and David (Kim) Watland of Taber; three grandchildren Tiffanni, Alexander and Dylan; one great grandson Jasper. She is also survived by her sister Judy (Dennis) Dutcha, sister-in-law Agnes Comeau as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families.

She was predeceased by her husband David, parents Leo and Pearl Wilcox, step-father Bob Baker, aunt, uncle, one sister-in-law and three brothers-in-law.

Val was born in Regina, Saskatchewan on February 24, 1945 to Leo and Pearl Wilcox. It was her aunt Gladys and uncle Walter Hebner who raised her in Tisdale and whom she considered mom and dad. When Val was eighteen years old she moved to Alberta to help Pearl and her step-father Bob, in their coffee shop. It was in Calgary that she met Dave and they were married in March of 1968. After their marriage they lived in Drayton Valley for a few years before moving to Edmonton where both of their children were born. In the next few years the family moved back to Calgary and to Fort McMurray before settling in southern Alberta where the kids started and finished school. After twenty six years of marriage, Val became a widow when Dave passed away. She eventually left Taber in 2004 and moved to Lethbridge and then to Coaldale in 2014. Val was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who took joy from being with her family. Some of the past times that she enjoyed included reading and playing crib. Mainly, she enjoyed being with people and was never happier than when she was in a social setting with friends or family. This was reflected in her service with both the Women of the Moose and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Legion. She was also actively involved in church, bible studies and the Christian Ladies group. While living at both the Sunny South Lodge and the Coaldale Health Centre, she enjoyed the social activities that were offered and could be counted on to be a part of whatever game, event, church service, sing-a-long, or entertainment that was planned. Val was always a dedicated and energetic participant and volunteer.

If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Val’s name may be made directly to the Alberta Lung Association, Box 4500, Station South, Edmonton, Alberta T6E 6K2 www.ab.lung.ca.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Coaldale Health Center for their care of Val over the last three years.
