Hugo Wagner, passed away in Taber on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at the age of 81 years.

The Funeral Service was held at Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at 10:00 A.M. Burial followed at the Taber Memorial Garden.

Hugo is survived by his sister Erika Hilz of Lethbridge; sister-in-law Erika Wagner of Taber; nieces and nephews Linda (Mike) Armstrong and children Dillon and Brynn; Ron Wagner (Kandy Young) and children Jennifer and Nash; James Wagner, Brian Gustum (Julie Swanson) and Brenda (Albert) Seibert as well as his beloved cat, Charlie.

He was predeceased by parents Johannes and Elsa Wagner, brother Herbert Wagner.

Hugo was born in Bessarabia on December 14, 1937 to Johannes and Elsa Wagner. He emigrated from Bessarabia as a child at the beginning of the war in 1939 to Germany. They stayed there until 1953 when the family immigrated to Canada for beet labour in Diamond City. The family was sponsored by Lutheran Churches of America for a period of two years in the sugar beet industry. During the growing season, Hugo worked on the farm and during the winter he worked up north in the bush, logging. The family

moved to Taber in 1955 and once again did beets for a local farmer. In 1959 they rented a farm south of Taber by Horsefly Lake, and bought the same farm in 1961. More land was bought and Hugo farmed in partnership with his brother and father; they farmed grains, hay, sugar beets as well as a cow/calf operation. The brothers won many high tonnage Sugar Beet King awards over the years. Hugo retired from full time farming in 1999 and moved into Taber.

Hugo loved bowling and hunting. He will be fondly remembered as a generous and loving uncle and great uncle as well as a great friend.
