Peter Schmitt

1962 - 2021

Peter Schmitt, beloved husband of Edith Schmitt, passed away in Vauxhall on Thursday, May 6, 2021 at the age of 59 years.

The Funeral Service was held at the Old Colony Mennonite Church, Vauxhall on Sunday, May 9, 2021. Burial followed at the Old Colony Mennonite Cemetery, Vauxhall.

Besides his loving wife Edith, he is survived by their children Anna, John, Helena, Eva, Judy, their spouses and by seventeen grandchildren. He is also survived by numerous relatives.

He was predeceased by four children and two grandchildren.

Peter was born to Johan and Helena Schmitt in Mexico on March 4, 1962. He was the oldest of nine children; seven brothers and one sister.

Peter married Edith Redekop on July 11, 1982 in Mexico. They had nine children, five girls and four boys.

Peter's life was filled with medical hardship. He had rheumatic fever at the age of six. This affected his heart valve, which then caused a major stroke at the age of twenty seven. This included learning how to walk and talk again following his stroke. Shortly after this in 1989, he had open heart surgery in London, Ontario. Then in 1998 his heart valve was replaced in Calgary. In 2016, he was diagnosed with congestive heart failure.

Peter spent many a time in the hospital. His hope was to pass at home and this came to be the evening of May 6, 2021 at 5:50 P.M., surrounded by his wife, children and grandchildren. Though his life was difficult, he always spoke of being able to have the privilege again to work and provide for his family.

His hope and prayer in his last hours was to see the gates of Heaven and to sit in the lap of Jesus.
