JOHN PAUN

1933 - 2003

John Paun of Taber, beloved husband of Barb Paun, passed away on Friday, October 3, 2003 at the age of 70 years.
John was born and raised in Dysart, Saskatchewan where he attended Gardner school. He served in the Canadian Army from 1952 to 1955 in Continental Europe. He fought in the Far East from 1957 to 1960 and was part of the “Lord Strathcona Regiment”. For his part he was awarded the United Nations Service Medal. He married Barbara Wentz on April 15, 1961 in Regina. John was an easy going, simple man who liked simple things. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and spent many hours pursuing this passion while living in the Yukon from 1970 to 1983. He was a quite loving man who was the true “family man”. Being a heavy duty mechanic, he enjoyed fixing his boys many vehicles and tinkering in his garage. John loved to golf and coach his boys hockey teams but the time he spent with his grandchildren was the most precious to him. He was a huge sports fan with hockey is #1 passion. He faithfully watched Hockey Night in Canada each and every Saturday night with the Calgary Flames being his favorite team. John was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and a Lifetime Member of the Lions. He loved to help other people and try to make a difference for those less fortunate then himself. In 1994 he took a dream vacation to Maui, Hawaii with his wife, daughter, son-in-law and new granddaughter Robyn Paige. He loved the ocean and thought he had found his little piece of heaven. He was particularly proud of his granddaughter Jillian who preformed at the opening and closing ceremonies of the Salt Lake Olympics in 2002. Brittany and David kept grandpa young at heart with their daily visits and smiling faces. Grandpa was blessed with a special granddaughter, Hunter Lea, in 1998. She truly is a Paun in everyway, a chip off the old block. John was looking forward to seeing his youngest grandson, Braeden, play hockey this past summer at the Sylvan Lake Hockey School. Sadly he was diagnosed with cancer and was unable to go. He was very disappointed but we know that he will be watching from above and smiling each time Braeden scores for grandpa.
John will be forever remembered in the hearts of his beloved wife Barb and their children Sandra (Mike Burnett) and their children Robyn and Braeden of Whitehorse; Scott and his daughter Hunter Lea of Hanna; Stacey (Susan) Paun and children Brittany and David of Taber and Kelly (Amy) Paun and daughter Jillian of Salt Lake City, Utah; his brother and sisters George Paun, Ana Hall, Nellie Zaremba and Heddy Irwin and also by numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents Radu and Vera Paun and two sisters Helen Susa and Mary Topal.
Relatives and friends were invited to pay their respects at the Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Sunday, October 5, 2003 from 7:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.
