CATHERINE FIRTH

1909 - 2000

Catherine “Kit” Olwen Firth (nee Hughes), beloved wife of the late Christopher Firth, passed away in Taber on Sunday, June 4, 2000 at the age of 90 years.
Catherine was born on December 29, 1909 in Cefn Coed, South Wales. She came to Canada in 1919 along with her mother, brothers and sister. In 1928, she married Christopher Firth and together they farmed their land in the River Bend area north of Taber for 40 years. Upon Chris’ death in 1968, she moved to Taber and worked for the Taber Canning Factory for a number of years. Kit was a long time member of the Royal Purple of Canada and Parkside Manor. She loved to sing and was a member of the Seniors Choralaires and a member of the L.D.S. Church Choir for many years. In 1984 she was the oldest person to walk in the Taber Elkathon. In 1988, Kit was chosen as the Senior Citizen of the Year at the Taber Kinsman Club Annual Heritage Day Banquet.
Kit will be forever remembered by her two sons, Bill (Bev) Firth of Taber and Gary (Dianne) Firth of St. Albert; three daughters, Gwen Wilk of Taber, Phyllis (Henry) Lewicki of Lethbridge and Jane (Eric) Oxley of Stirling; one brother William J. (Truus) Wright of Taber; a daughter-in-law Huguette Firth of Scarborough, Ontario; twenty three grandchildren, one step granddaughter, twenty three great grandchildren, four step great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Christopher on February 25, 1968; one son Edward Firth on September 2, 1998; a brother Harry Hughes; a sister Jennie Woods; her parents Gwenllian and Evan Hughes; her step-father, William J. Wright Sr. and a son-in-law Frank Wilk.
Relatives and friends were invited to meet with the family at Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Wednesday, June 7, 2000 from 7:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. and also prior to the funeral service in the Relief Society Room of the church from 1:00 P.M. to 1:45 P.m.
The Funeral Service was held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Taber Stake Centre, 4709 - 50 Avenue, Taber on Thursday, June 8, 2000 at 2:00 P.M. Burial to take place at the Taber Memorial Garden.
