Helen Archer (nee Makinson), beloved wife of the late John Archer, passed away in Taber on Thursday, March 5, 2015 at the age of 89 years.
Relatives and friends were invited to meet with the family at Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Thursday, March 12, 2015 between 7:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M. and also at the church in the Relief Society Room prior to the funeral service on Friday, March 13, 2015 between 1:00 P.M. and 1:40 P.M.
The Funeral Service was held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Taber Stake Centre, 4709 - 50 Avenue, Taber on Friday, March 13, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. Burial followed at the Taber Memorial Garden.
Helen is survived by her children LaVerne (Dave) Sawatzky of Barnwell, Jean (Roy) Ahlstrom of Westlock, Shirley Elgie of Redcliff, Sharon Kerkhoff of Taber and Mildred Archer (Henry Jergens) of Taber; twelve grandchildren, twenty four great grandchildren and thirteen great great grandchildren as well as her sister Violet Charlton of Taber.
She was predeceased by her husband John Archer; great grandson Evan Sawatzky; parents Joe and Mary Makinson; sons-in-law Norman Elgie and Danny Kerkhoff; two sisters and spouses, Thelma (Norton) Winchester and Josie (Wesley) Dunz; brother Bill Makinson and brother-in-law Harry Charlton.
Helen was born in Taber on July 17, 1925 to Joseph and Mary Makinson. She lived in Taber her entire life. Helen married John Archer on November 30, 1943. Together they raised five daughters on a farm east of Taber, near Purple Springs. They grew grain, row crops, forage and raised a multitude of animals. Helen worked alongside John on the farm. Helen and John sold the farm and moved to town in 1981. Following John’s passing in 1991, Helen stayed in their home until 2003 when she moved to an apartment in Pioneer Place. She moved to Clearview Lodge in 2013 when her health took a downturn. She resided at Clearview until the time of her passing.
