Elsie was born in Hungary on September 17, 1924 to James & Elizabeth Dorogdi. Her parents came to Canada without her and her sisters to find work and settled in the Taber area. Two years later when Elsie was four, she immigrated with two of her sisters and an aunt by boat and train. After arriving in Canada, the three girls age four, six and eight got lost in Toronto. Seeing that they were unable to speak english, this was a terrifying experience for them and also their parents. After two weeks searching for the girls, they were located and James & Elizabeth were happy to have them in Taber.
Elsie married Andy Astalos in 1941 and they farmed in Taber until 1967 when they moved to town. Elsie began working at KFC in 1974 and a few years later became store manager. She worked until 2001 at the age of 76 years and only retired due to ill health. She loved her job and enjoyed the regulars coming in everyday to eat and have coffee. She loved to visit and joke with everyone.
Elsie loved to travel with her sister Ester through Europe, Alaska and the United States. Most of all, she loved her family and enjoyed spending the holidays together and sharing a big meal! Elsie will be lovingly missed and fondly remembered by her family who loved and adored her.
Relatives and friends are invited to meet with the family at Knox United Church, 4929 - 50 Avenue, Taber on Wednesday, December 3, 2008 between 7:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M.
