NICOLAY HAALAND

1908 - 1998

Nicolay Haaland, beloved husband of Olga Haaland of Vauxhall, passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, January 30, 1998 at the age of 89 years.
Nicolay “Slim” was born in Varhaug, Norway on December 9, 1908 and twenty years later in 1928, he came to Canada because he had heard it was the Promised Land. In 1938 he married Olga Chelte. They farmed land in the Kinnindale area near Lomond before moving to Circle Hill in 1946. They continued to farm before retiring to Vauxhall in 1973.
Besides his loving wife Olga, Nickolay is also survived by a daughter Nancy (Bob) Saunders of Victoria, British Columbia; two sons Wayne (Debra) Haaland of Calgary and Bryce Haaland of Calgary; one grandson Nicolai John Haaland; four sisters Bergit Tonnessen, Agnes Stromsvold, Bertha (Lillemar) Tjelta and Kari Dalheim all of Norway.
He was predeceased by one son Benny Haaland; two sisters Lisa and Segfried as well as a brother Torjus.
Relatives and friends were invited to meet with the family at the Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber, on Monday, February 2, 1998 from 7:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.
The Funeral Service was held at the Vauxhall Mennonite Brethren Church, 320 - 9 Street North, Vauxhall on Tuesday, February 3, 1998 at 2:00 P.M. with Reverend Bruce Sheasby of Parkview United Church officiating. Interment followed at the Enchant Cemetery.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Nicolay’s name may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
