1919 - 2002

Katie Turuk passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 7, 2002 at Bowview Manor, Calgary where she had been a resident since 1983.
Katie is survived by her two sons Steve of Brooks and Joe of Cochrane and financeé Novelette; two sisters Elizabeth Rudolf of Taber and Teresa (John) Fritz of Warburg, Alberta; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Steve in 1975; son John in 1966; daughter-in-law Heather in 1997 and brother-in-law Chester Rudolf in 2001.
Katie immigrated to Canada in 1928 when she was nine years of age with her mother Anna Merkl. Her father Joe Merkl came in 1925 to prepare the way for his family. They settled in Taber area and soon purchased their own land. In 1936 Katie married Steve Turuk and they bought farmland southeast of Taber, where they farmed until 1965. Katie loved the farm life and worked very hard. She enjoyed her own cattle and always had a terrific garden. She was very adept at keeping everyone fed by raising turkeys, geese, chickens and ducks. After they quit farming, Katie worked at the Cannery and the Potato Factory until 1972 when she retired. Over the eighteen years she spent at Bowview Manor Katie touched many lives and she enjoyed the many staff that had looked after her.
Relatives and friends were invited for Prayers at the Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Friday, May 10, 2002 at 8:00 P.M.
The Funeral Service was held at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, 5009 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Saturday, May 11 at 11:30 A.M. with Deacon Mike Whalen officiating. Interment followed in the Taber Memorial Garden.
