MIKE SEVINSKI

1924 - 2002

Michael ‘Mike’ Peter Sevinski of Taber, passed away at the Taber Hospital on Monday, June 10, 2002 at the age of 77 years.
Mike was born on November 17, 1924 in Baczacz, Poland. At the age of three, Mike came to Canada with his family and settled in Fox Valley, Saskatchewan. In 1942 he moved with his family to Taber, where he resided until his passing. Mike joined the Edmonton Grenadiers in WWII and served with the RCASC. After the war he joined the RCAF until he was discharged and then returned to Taber. Mike worked all over Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta on the Oil Rigs. He was a good Oilman. One thing about him, he was a little before his time, he never compromised safety. In the days when safety was just a word, he lived it. He talked the talk and walked the walk. One of his favorite quotes was “Safe-ety is first.” It’s only been the past few years that the Oil Industry has really gone on a safety kick. He was the kind of man who would share the last dime in his pocket; cry at “Old Yeller” and have a kind word for everyone. He was a hard task master and would run his crew like a Drill Sergeant and could scream and shout like a Division of Drunken Sailors. Although Mike was stern, anyone he worked with, or touched with his personality, came to like and respect him. Mike was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 20 for the past fifty two years. He enjoyed spending many hours playing games of crib, smear, darts and visiting with the other members.
He will be forever remembered and cherished by his son, Ken (Saowanee) Sevinski of Bangkok, Thailand and children Kim and Katherine Sevinski, Saowaloack, Saowakhun and Surit Pongsuvan, all of Bangkok Thailand; Michael and Jody-Anne, of Victoria British Columbia; his daughter, Twyla Harvey (David Pearce) of Lethbridge and children Brandy and Erin Harvey, Kristin and Jessie Pearce and seven great-grandchildren. Mike is also survived by his sister and brothers, Irene (John) Gregus, John Sevinski, Harry (Jean) Sowinski all of Taber; sister-in-law Edith Sevinski of Fernie British Columbia and brother-in-law Peter Leskiw Sr. of Lethbridge as well as many nephews and nieces.
Mike was predeceased by his parents Michael and Annie Sowinski; sister Agnes Leskiw; two brothers, Peter Sowinski and Joe Sevinski and a niece Linda Sowinski.
Relatives and friends were invited for Prayers at Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Friday, June 14, 2002 at 7:00 P.M. recited by Deacon Mike Whalen.
The Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, 5009 - 48 Avenue Taber, on Saturday, June 15, 2002 at 10:30 A.M. with Reverend Jim de los Angeles celebrant. Interment followed in the Taber Memorial Garden.
