JOAN SANGSTER

1922 - 1999

Joan Sangster, best friend and life partner for fifty seven years of William Sangster of Taber, passed away following a long and courageous battle with cancer, at her home surrounded by her family on Wednesday, November 17, 1999 at the age of 77 years.
Joan was born On October 17, 1922 in Lethbridge, the daughter of John and Jessie Hamilton. She was raised and received her schooling in Lethbridge. On June 1, 1942 she married William Sangster in Lethbridge. In 1951, along with their three children, the family moved to Fincastle where they farmed and later completed their family with the birth of two more children. In 1980 the family farm was sold and they retired to Taber. Joan was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who devoted her life to her family. She became a partner with her daughter in a beauty salon and worked part time at Henderson’s Hardware and at Fashion Flowers. Mom liked all flowers but loved her roses. In her leisure time she enjoyed knitting, quilting and the occasional bingo game. During the holiday season, Joan baked her scottish shortbread, cherry cake and fudge for her family. As her children and grandchildren were involved in various sports, Mom became their number one fan always cheering them on. In partnership with her husband Bill, she spent many hours involved with 4-H over a twenty five year span. She was also a member of the Fort Whoop-Up Ladies Group, The Dominion Rebecca Lodge, Reliance UCW and T.O.P.S. Joan liked to travel, enjoying two trips to Scotland with Bill and a trip to Hawaii with her T.O.P.S. group. Her most recent achievement was receiving her fifteen year award as a member of T.O.P.S., for which she was very proud.
Besides her husband William, Joan’s memory will be cherished by her children, a son Bill (Joan) Sangster of Calgary and their family Brian (Enid) and family, Venita (Rick) and family, Cameron, step children Sherri, Preston and Quinton (Karen); a daughter Lynn (Jake) Thiessen and their family Carey and her daughter Nevada and Jace of Vauxhall; a daughter Norma Sangster of Atikameg; a son Ian (Sandy) Sangster and their children Kira and Brody of Taber; and a daughter Cathy (Doug) Odland and their children KaLey, Jesse and Brooke of Vauxhall.
