IRENE JENSEN

1925 - 2001

“Irene” Elizebeth Jensen, beloved wife of Elmer Jensen of Taber, passed away on Monday, June 11, 2001 at the age of 75 years.
Irene was born the daughter of Frank and Justina Banman on August 8, 1925 in Russia. At the age of five she and her family came to Canada on the “Queen Mary”. In 1941 the family made their way to Taber. A short time after their arrival her parents moved to British Columbia. Irene decided to stay in Taber making it her home and worked at the Rex Cafe. She met Elmer Jensen and later married him on July 1, 1943 in Barnwell. Irene and Elmer would have celebrated their fifty eighth year of marriage on July 1 of this year. As a devoted wife, Irene went with Elmer to Moose Jaw where he joined the Airforce in October of 1943. She later moved back to Taber awaiting Elmer’s return in 1946.
Irene worked at the hospital in Taber for a period of time before working at the cannery, retiring from there in 1989 after fifteen years of service. She enjoyed her retirement helping others by means of volunteering her time at the Hospital, the Tuck Shop and other community oriented events. She served as President of the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary and was awarded a life membership. Every year Irene looked forward to walking with the Legion Ladies in the annual parade. She was also involved with the Lady Lions serving as President as well.
Irene always kept her hands busy knitting, crocheting and sewing quilts and other crafts. She had a “green thumb” which was evident by the plants she kept and the garden she grew. She also knew her way around the kitchen and loved to bake and cook for her family.
The memories of Irene will always live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
Besides her husband of fifty seven years, Elmer, she will be forever cherished by her son Gayle (Lester Ann) Jensen; a daughter Pat (Ray) Mulhall; grandchildren, Justina Dawn (Allen) Ackroyd and their daughter Jillian; Gaylene (Duane) Nelson and their children Taylor, Jordan and Sydney Gayle; and Neil Jensen; Shane (Lynn) Mulhall and Renee Mulhall; four sisters, one brother as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was predeceased by her parents, two sisters and one brother.
Relatives and friends were invited to meet with the family at Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Thursday, June 14, 2001 from 7:00 P.M. to 8:30 P.M. and also prior to the funeral service in the Relief Society Room of the Church on Friday, June 15, 2001 from 12:30 P.M. to 1:40 P.M.
The Funeral Service was held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 5314 - 54 Street, Taber on Friday, June 15, 2001 at 2:00 P.M. with Bishop Bruce Francis conducting. Interment followed at the Taber Memorial Garden.
