DAVID FIKUS

1948 - 2008

David Fikus, beloved husband of Gwen Fikus of Vauxhall, passed away in Taber on Sunday, January 20, 2008 at the age of 59 years.
Besides his loving wife Gwen, he is survived by his daughters Diane (Brad) Fikus of Duchess and Heather (Brian) Fikus of Canmore; sisters Sylvia Mittelbach of Germany, Helga (Reg) Merkley of Medicine Hat, Renate (Gerhard) Kuessner of Vauxhall and Yutta (Ron) Brown of Calgary; brothers Reinhold (Rosie) Fikus of Germany, Oswin (Rosemary) Fikus of Medicine Hat and Heinz (Val) Fikus of Kaslo, British Columbia; sisters-in-law Carole Crombez and Joyce Bach as well as numerous nieces and nephews both in Canada and Germany and by his special friends Philip & Barb Forchuk and Henry & Karen Schulz.
He was predeceased by his parents Josef & Elisabeth Fikus.
David was born December 14, 1948 in Germany.  He immigrated to Canada at the age of eight with his parents.  They settled in Vauxhall where David attended school. David married Gwen Coutts on September 30, 1972. He owned and operated Vauxhall Meat and Sausage, working as a meat cutter and sausage maker extraordinaire. He was active in the Vauxhall Ag Society, Vauxhall Legion, T.O.P.S., Masons and the Vauxhall Legion. David enjoyed fishing, travelling and work. He was an avid Edmonton Oilers and Edmonton Eskimos fan. David loved to laugh and tease his family and friends. David was one of those rare things, a truly good man. His generosity was well known and his commitment to the community was total.  He was always willing to commit time, energy and money to any cause that would benefit the community, especially if it involved young people.  Although he was nowhere close to a saint, he enjoyed people and lived to help those he could.
A private family burial will take place prior to the service at the Vauxhall Cemetery.
The Funeral Service will be held at the Vauxhall Mennonite Brethren Church, 320 - 9 Street North, Vauxhall on Friday, January 25, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. with Pastor Elroy Senneker officiating.
If friends so desire in lieu of flowers, memorial tributes in David’s name may be made directly to either the Vauxhall Lions Club, P.O. Box 729 Vauxhall, Alberta T0K 2K0, the Royal Canadian Legion, P.O. Box 125, Vauxhall, Alberta T0K 2K0 or to the Vauxhall Public Library, P.O. Box 265, Vauxhall, Alberta T0K 2K0.
