EVELYN HERGOTT

1907 - 2004

We celebrate the life of Evelyn Elizabeth Hergott who died peacefully on January 13, 2004 in Bow Island.
Evelyn Hochstein was born on December 6, 1907 on the family ranch fifteen miles south of Pincher Creek.  She was the fourth of eight children born to August and Mary Hochstein. All of her siblings, except her youngest sister Blanche Bonertz predeceased her.  Evelyn completed Grade 12 at Sacred Heart Convent in Calgary, a boarding school operated by the Faithful Companions of Jesus.  A special and mutual life-long affection developed between Evelyn and the FCJ sisters.  She held them, and the good work they do, in high esteem.  After high school Evelyn attended Teacher's College in Calgary and received a first class teaching certificate.  She taught for four years at rural schools near Pincher Creek, Fort Macleod and lastly Bow Island.  Her move to Bow Island was provident, for it was there she met Laurence Halpin, whom she married on October 21, 1931.  Laurence and Evelyn shared almost 28 wonderful years together before Laurence's sudden death in 1958.  They farmed near Bow Island and had four children; Sheila (Ed) Torsher, Patricia, who became a sister of the Faithful Companions of Jesus, Roger (Gayle) Halpin and Tim (Evelyn) Halpin.  Evelyn's children, eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren survive and will dearly miss her.  She was predeceased by her son-in-law Ed Torsher.  On February 29, 1964 Evelyn married Leonard Hergott and shortly thereafter she moved from Lethbridge, where she had moved following Laurence's death, to Calgary.  Evelyn and Len spent many happy times together until Len's death in March of 1994.  In 1997 Evelyn returned to Bow Island to live in Pleasant View Lodge where she received excellent compassionate care.  Sheila's attention and love significantly contributed to Evelyn's comfort and well being in her latter years.  Evelyn was a faithful member of the Catholic Women's League for over 70 years.
Relatives and friends are invited for Prayers at St. Michael's Catholic Church (1st Street East) Bow Island on Friday, January 16, 2004 at 7:00 P.M.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Church on Saturday, January 17 at 11:00 A.M. with Reverend Father Thomas Vadassery celebrant. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery, Medicine Hat, Alberta.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Evelyn's name may be made to the Pleasant View Lodge, Bag 6700, Bow Island, Alberta T0K 0G0.
