Matthew Adam Sekura, know to others as Matt or Mayor Matty, was born on June 14, 1967 in Taber, where he spent most of his life. Matt’s work in the oilfield led him to many places across Alberta and British Columbia, where he met his “Sweetness” Damita and her son Alex. Matt brought the two back to Taber where he purchased an acreage for them to live together as a family. He took Alex in as his own son and together they spent a lot of time working on the acreage and making it their own, all while raising their puppy Davis. Matt was very proud of the acreage but decided he wanted to be closer to his work and moved to Red Deer. During this time, Damita decided to return home to British Columbia to support her family there. Matt continued working in Red Deer where he met his current spouse, Vivian Markin.

Matt and Vivian spent a lot of time riding bikes and exploring the wilderness in the Red Deer area, still with their dog Davis by their side. When Davis passed away, Matt and Vivian decided to adopt a new puppy together and named her Jax. Although Matt and Vivian both enjoyed the Red Deer area, he ultimately decided to come back to Taber to be with his family, including his son Alex, his two grandkids Joelie and Jace, his mother Mary and his brother Joey.

Matt was proud of a lot of things in his life, including the work he accomplished, both in his employment and at home. Matt had a special knack for taking the simplest things and making them his own. He could often be found completing some beautification project, the most recent being the work on his fifth wheel, which looked more like a home after he got his hands on it. However, he was most proud of his son Alex and his grandchildren. He loved to spend time with them including playing ball with Jax and Jace, watching Joelie dance and watching Alex perform in his band, Eons of Earth.

Matt lived a full and happy life and unfortunately became sick in the last months of his life. Matt was a strong, stubborn man who didn’t let his pain be known to the world, and for this he will always be remembered. Unfortunately, the weight of this pain was too much for him to carry, and Matt died by suicide on Monday, June 12, 2023.

If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Matthew’s name may be made directly to the Canada Association for Suicide Prevention (CASP), PMB 619, Unit 104, 743 Railway Avenue, Canmore, Alberta T1W 1P2 www.suicideprevention.ca/tribute-donation.
