1920 - 2007

Norton Williams Winchester, beloved husband of the late Thelma Winchester, passed away peacefully in Taber on Sunday, September 30, 2007 at the age of 87 years.
Norton will be forever remembered and loved by his step-children Robert (Sonia) Smith of Nanaimo, British Columbia, Leo (Marilyn) Smith of Lantzville, British Columbia, Linda (Tracey) Birch of Red Deer, Lorraine Clark of Taber, Kenneth Smith of High River and Sherry (David) Walker of Foremost; daughter-in-law Judy Smith of High Prairie; sixteen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.  He is also survived by his mother-in-law Mary Makinson of Taber; sisters-in-law Helen Archer, Violet Charlton and Josie Dunz; cousins Sybil Goldthorpe, Earl (Doreen) Winchester, Carol Korsa and Luella Layko.
He was predeceased by his step-son Wayne Smith, parents Ralph & Olive Winchester; father-in-law Joseph Makinson, brothers-in-law John Archer, Harry Charlton and Wesly Dunz as well as numerous cousins.
Norton was born February 6, 1920 to Ralph Norton Winchester and Olive Grace (nee Williams) Winchester.  He grew up on the family farm northwest of Taber and received his education in the Taber area.  Norton helped on the farm until he enlisted in the Canadian Army on December 30,1941 and served until he was discharged on January 8, 1946.  When he returned home from the Army, he worked with his father on the family farm.  Norton remained a bachelor until he married Thelma Lafern (nee Makinson) Smith on September 17, 1966.  He said that he had always wanted a wife and family and he now had a wife and seven step-children, four of which were still living at home.  Norton farmed several years and later worked for Lucerne Foods. His hobbies included fishing, gardening and woodworking. He especially enjoyed making clocks.
The Funeral Service will be held at Knox United Church, 4929 - 50 Avenue, Taber on Thursday, October 4, 2007 at 2:00 P.M. with Reverend Frank Lewis officiating.  Burial to follow at the Taber Memorial Garden.
