Doug is survived by his kids, Jeremy (Antonia) Campbell of Taber and Jamie (Kevin) McCurdy of Medicine Hat, his grandson Jaxson and his two grand-dogs, Nala and Gizmo. He is also survived by his brother Ken (Diane), sister Brenda, along with several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife Rhona in 2018.
Doug was born in Swift Current, Saskatchewan on February 29, 1952 to Clifford and Evelyn Campbell. He graduated from Swift Current Comprehensive High School and immediately moved to Medicine Hat to attend the Medicine Hat College. After obtaining his Diploma in Physical Education, Doug moved to Lethbridge to attend the University of Lethbridge and obtain his Teaching Degree. This is where he met the love of his life, Rhona. Doug offered his seat on the City Bus to Rhona and the rest is history. They were married for forty one years when Rhona passed away in April 2018.
Doug had a real passion for teaching and was even brave enough to teach Grade eight for several years. He taught for thirty seven years before retiring in 2012. For anyone who knew Doug, he was obsessed with wearing "Crocs and socks". No matter the weather outside, Doug could always be seen wearing his iconic Crocs. When he retired, his colleagues and students had a parade for him where they all wore "Crocs and socks" to honor his retirement from teaching.
Doug always had a smile on his face (unless he missed a shot in golf) and always had some kind of comical thing to say in the conversation. He enjoyed several sports but his favorites were bowling and golf. If Doug wasn't bowling, he was golfing. He threw two perfect games in his bowling career and made it to Nationals in 1997. Doug and Jeremy played in several tournaments and won the majority of them. He said it was due to his short game but Jeremy knew it was thanks to his long drives. “We let Doug have the win”. He would have the best tan lines on his legs from his golf socks up to his shin and his golf glove.
Doug was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 2016, Kidney Failure in 2021 and Dementia in 2023. His health continued to decline over the years, resulting in having to move into a Long Term Care facility in March 2024. In the Fall of 2024, his health took a significant decline and continued to worsen, which ultimately lead to his passing.
Doug will be missed by many friends and family. His family and friends are comforted knowing that Doug has been reunited with Rhona, the love of his life, along with other family members and friends who predeceased him.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Doug's name may be made directly to Taber Lost Paws Society, 5710 - 66 Avenue, Taber, Alberta T1G 1B8 www.taberlostpawssociety.com, where Nala was adopted from.
