Alice Ohashi

1926 - 2026

Chitoa “Alice’ Ohashi (née Sasaki), beloved wife of the late Hiroshi “Joe” Ohashi, passed away in Taber on Thursday, July 2, 2026 at the age of 99 years.

Alice will be remembered as a deeply loving and devoted mother to her children Joy (Mike) Regan, Carole (Blake) Tomiyama, Ron Ohashi, Maureen (Greg) Nakamura and Sharon Ohashi. Alice nurtured deep connections with each of her grandchildren, and will be forever adored by Alison, Braden, Brian, Erica, Erin, Jenna, Jordan, Kendra, Kiara, Kristin, Marlee, Melissa, Michael, Shauna, and Stephanie, as well as her great grandchildren Brady, Brynlee, Callum, Charlie, Micah and Owen. She will be deeply missed by her sister Tomiye “Tomi” Hisaoka; son-in-law Ian Wolsey as well as numerous other relatives, close friends and caregivers.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband Hiroshi “Joe” Ohashi; daughter Lorraine Wolsey; parents Misako and Richii Sasaki; sisters Yoshiye “Yo” Ikebuchi and Yemiko “Amy” Kurio; brothers Jiro and Nobuo “Nobu” Sasaki.

Alice was born August 14, 1926 in Clayburn, British Columbia. She treasured memories of her childhood on her family’s strawberry farm, part of which housed a gathering space for the surrounding Japanese Canadian community. In 1942, Alice and her family were displaced to Welling during the Japanese Internment. A lifelong and resilient learner, Alice was determined to complete her education by correspondence and received special permission to work in Calgary. Alice raised a family in Taber with her husband Joe, which has remained her home for over seventy years.

It is difficult to encompass someone so expansive with so few words. To our family, and so many others who have crossed her path, she is simply “Grandma” - a title that signifies the depth of all embracing love and care that she has gifted to those around her. Grandma, we will remember you as exceedingly wise and witty, kind in every encounter, deeply generous and loving beyond measure. Thank you for shaping how we have come to see the world: each day is beautiful because of you.

A private funeral service will be held at Southland Funeral Chapel. Burial to follow at the Taber Memorial Garden.

Koden is respectfully declined.
