Hazel West

1924 - 2026

Hazel Laura West (née Walker), beloved wife of the late Russell West, passed away in Taber on Sunday, June 21, 2026 at the age of 101 years.

Hazel is survived by her children Jean Braun of Taber, Vicki and Marvin Clifton of Calgary, Robert and Linda (née Sorgard) West of Taber, Beverly West of Calgary and Bruce and Marion (née Campbell) West of Lethbridge. Her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren are her precious legacy and she loved and cherished all of them.

She was predeceased by her husband Russell of Taber; great grandson Erik Russell Petr of Calgary; birth mother Isabel May; adoptive parents Thomas and Edith Walker and brothers Eric and Douglas all of England.

Hazel was born in London, England and married Russell West, an RCAF pilot, while he was serving in England during WWII. She came to Canada as a War Bride in 1946.

She loved life and all that this world has to offer. Hazel had a particular love of the ocean and a special affinity for God’s creatures. She will be remembered for her love of the performing arts and was always eager to pass on her training and knowledge to others, especially by way of W. R. Myers musicals. Hazel was an accomplished singer and loved acting and anything to do with performing. She attended the University of Lethbridge as a mature student where she earned a Bachelor of Education degree. Hazel taught junior and senior high school Language Arts and Drama at W.R. Myers Junior and Senior High School.

She was a member of the Taber Players and served on the Taber Library, Museum Literacy and Hospital Foundation Boards.

A private burial service will be held at the Taber Memorial Garden prior to the funeral service on Saturday, July 4, 2026.

The Memorial Service to honor Hazel’s life will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Taber Stake Centre, 4709 - 50 Avenue, Taber on Saturday, July 4, 2026 at 11:00 A.M.

 Those who are unable to attend and wish to view the service online may do so by visiting Hazel’s obituary page on our website and clicking on the livestream link that will be available at 10:45 A.M. on Saturday, July 4, 2026. Barring any technical difficulties, the livestream will begin at 11:00 A.M.
