NEWT OEVERING

1932 - 1998

Newton Oevering of Taber, beloved father of Donald Grant Oevering and Rosalind Jane Sims and former wife Karen Oevering, passed away suddenly in Lethbridge on Wednesday, August 19, 1998 at the age of 66 years.
Newton was born in Hantum Friesland, The Netherlands. He came to Canada with his parents and brothers in 1950 landing in Barnwell, then working as a beet worker for Norman Fenske. In 1953 he moved to Taber where he worked as a farm hand and various other jobs until he gained permanent employment with the government as an irrigation Technician. At the age of fifty five, he retired and remained so up until the time of his passing. Newt loved the outdoors and was an irrigation consultant to many farmers in the area. He also attained an agriculture diploma from Holland.
Newton is survived by his former wife Karen Oevering; two children, a son Donald Oevering and a daughter Rosalind (Bill) Sims and their children Casey, Thomas and Shania; five brothers Pete (Nel) Oevering, Charlie (Mary) Oevering, Gerald (Tina) Oevering, Richard (Orla) Oevering and Mike Oevering; a sister-in-law Elisabeth Oevering as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents Paul and Mary Oevering and a brother George.
Newt spent many hours visiting his parents while they were residing at the Extended Care before their passing. He made daily visits to them caring for them and tending to the many plants which surrounded the facilities. He was a devoted father and spent many anxious hours being concerned for his children’s safety when they travelled to come home for a visit. He was a sugar diabetic and underwent surgery due to cancer in 1997. He was well known for his generosity and story telling. One of his favorite expressions was “what makes the difference?”. His Fresian Bible was his companion during morning devotion. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
Relatives and friends were invited to meet at the Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Friday, August 21, 1998 from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M.
