IONE WINKLER

1926 - 2001

Hazel “Ione” Winkler of Taber, beloved wife of the late Jack Winkler, passed away in Lethbridge as a result of a stroke and a traumatic fall, on Tuesday, December 18, 2001 at the age of 75 years.
Ione was born at Magrath on September 23, 1926 and was the eldest child born to John Edward Clifton and Margaret Carroll. By riding to classes on horseback, she received her schooling in Magrath and later attended Normal School in Calgary. Following the completion of her education she began teaching school in Wrentham and then taught school in Taber. While in Taber she met and then later married Jack Winkler on July 15, 1950. Jack and Ione farmed in between Retlaw and Taber and raised their three children in Taber. When Jack retired from farming in 1967, they enjoyed each others company square dancing and travelling to many different locations around the world. Ione was a faithful and devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many positions in the auxiliaries of the Church. Ione and Jack served a mission with the Church, which led them Ontario in 1984. Ione was a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and belonged to the Taber and Barnwell Seniors Clubs. Although she kept busy with the Church and her leisure activities, she always had time to use her car freely and willingly to give her friends rides and always had the time for her grandchildren.
Her grandchildren, who she was very proud of, were the sparkle in her eye and she loved to spend time with them. Ione loved her home and beautiful yard...especially her roses! She liked to see the big grain elevators and spent many days travelling around Alberta taking pictures of them before they would be demolished. She will be extremely missed but forever remembered by her family and many friends in Southern Alberta and all who knew her.
Ione is survived by two sons, John (Brenda) of Calgary and Donald (Mary) of Sandy, Utah; and a daughter, Marilyn (Rod) Peterson of Lethbridge; 10 grandchildren, Jackeileen, Angelina and Clifton Winkler; Michael, Ryan (currently serving a mission in Albania), Darren, Brent and Jason Peterson; and Scott and Natalie Winkler; two brothers, Ted (Betty) Clifton and Bob (Shirley) Clifton all of Magrath; and a sister Margaret (Dean) Lawlor of Lethbridge; a sister-in-law Noreen (Dick) Brumwell of Victoria and a brother-in-law Marion Jensen of Lethbridge as well as nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Jack in 1991.
Relatives and friends were invited to meet with the family prior to the funeral service in the Relief Society Room of church from 9:30 A.M. to 10:45 A.M.
The Funeral Service was held at The Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 5314 - 54 Street, Taber on Saturday, December 22, 2001 at 11:00 A.M. with Bishop Larry Taylor conducting. Burial followed in the Taber Memorial Garden.
Ione would often watch the STARS Air Ambulance from her home as it would land and then depart. It would be only fitting that if friends so desire, memorial tributes in Ione’s name can be made directly to S.T.A.R.S. 1441 Aviation Park N.E., P.O. Box 570 Calgary, Alberta T2E 8M7.
