Ed Torsher

1930 - 1996

Edward Lawrence Torsher, beloved husband of Sheila Torsher, passed away peacefully and with dignity on Wednesday, July 3, 1996 at the age of 65 years, following a brief and courageous battle with cancer.

In addition to his wife, he leaves to mourn his children Laurence and Lynn Torsher and granddaughter Evelyn of Rochester, Minnesota; Daniel Torsher and Marie - Helene Cote of Montreal, Quebec; Maureen Torsher, Larry Dumaine and granddaughter Alexa of Toronto, Ontario; Kevin Torsher, Lynn Wright and grandsons Eric and Guy of Cranbrook, British Columbia. He is also survived by his sister Katherine (Arne) Einarson of Winnipeg, Manitoba, brother Pete Torsher of Bow Island, sister Dorothy (Whendlean) Kambeitz of Taber and by numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother Joe Torsher and his parents Leo and Julia Torsher.

Ed was born in Medicine Hat on September 14 , 1930. He was educated in Bow Island and later at Olds Agricultural College. Ed married Sheila Halpin in 1958 and since 1959 they have operated a farming business near Bow Island.

Ed was committed to his family, his church and his community. He devoted himself to public service in numerous capacities throughout his life including as a member and Reeve of the County of Forty-Mlle Council, director of the Bow Island General Hospital, chairman of the board of the Bow Island Health Care Centre and more recently, as a member of the board of the Palliser Health Authority. Ed was active in municipal, public health and agricultural affairs for many years. He was a long, faithful member of the Knights of Columbus, held many offices in that organization and was active as a member and held various offices in the Bow Island Golf Club, Bow Island Curling Club, Royal Canadian Legion and Bow Island Elks Lodge.

The Prayer Service was held at St. Michael's Catholic Church, 1113 - 1 Street East, Bow Island on Friday, July 5, 1996 at 7:00 P.M.

The Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Michael's Catholic Church, 1113 - 1 Street East, Bow Island on Saturday, July 6, 1996 at 10:00 A.M. with Reverend Dominic Nguyen, Celebrant. Interment followed at the Bow Island Cemetery.
