LYLE MILES PLATT

1918 - 2006

Lyle Miles Platt, beloved husband of Crystal Mae Payne Platt of  Barnwell, departed this life at his home in Barnwell on Sunday, April 9, 2006, surrounded by his family, at the age of 87 years.
Besides his devoted wife Crystal, Lyle is survived by his children  Deveney (Cliff) Walters of Hawaii, Cameron (Mary Ann) Platt of  Lethbridge and Shelley Platt (Rick Burla) of Barnwell. He was the  beloved grandfather to eight grandchildren Trent (Cheryl) Walters,  Brett (Sandy) Walters, Lynae (Seth) Gambee, Kelli Ann (Duane)  Ellingson, Tiffany (Sherman) Williams, Clark (fiancee Samantha  Macmillan), Curtis (Ashley) Platt, Tayler Platt-Burla; ten great  grandchildren Megan, Bailey, Riley, Jalen, Payton, Dylan, Sydney,  Brock, Rocco and Abygail. He is also survived by his sister-in-law  Iola Platt.
He was predeceased by his parents, two sisters Juanita and Laurel and  five brothers Miles, Morgan, Ben, Reed, Jerome and their companions.
Lyle was born in Brant, Alberta on August 27, 1918, the youngest  child born to Thomas and Rosette Platt. Lyle lost his mother at the  age of eight and was raised by his loving father, brothers and  sisters, as they were raised on their family farm at Brant, Alberta.  Lyle eventually stayed on the farm and learned to love the land as he  worked closely beside his father.
While working the family farm during World War II, he traveled to  Calgary on many occasions to attend dances, where he met and  eventually married his beautiful bride Crystal Payne of Mountain  View, Alberta on October 17, 1945 in the Cardston, Alberta Temple.  Last October they celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary.  After their marriage they returned to the farm in Brant for four  years and then moved to Taber, Alberta in the fall of 1949 where he  owned and operated a furniture store with his brother Jerome. Lyle  and Crystal moved to Barnwell in 1950 where they raised their family  and continued to reside.
Lyle was a long and dedicated employee of the Taber Sugar Factory  where he served as a Chemist and Fieldman until he retired from full  time employment in 1983. Lyle never took a sick leave day in his  employment years. Along with this employment, he continued to farm a  quarter section of land south of Barnwell with his brother Ben. The  land was Lyle's passion. He took great pride in keeping his farm and  huge garden immaculate. One of our fondest memories of dad was of him  sitting on his tractor or combine until late at night. He taught his  family the value of hard work.
His dedication to community work was exemplified by his twenty nine  and a half years of service on the Taber Hospital Board, six of those  served as chairman. Here he was highly respected and his  contributions were many. As a member of the hospital board, he and  others played a major role in building the new hospital in Taber. He  was one of the founding fathers of the Barnwell 55 plus Club.
Lyle was a self taught saxophone player who didn't read music and  played by ear and spent many enjoyable hours entertaining his family  and friends. He met many friends playing in different bands and was a  guest soloist for the Soft Tones which was a highlight of his music  career. He found as much enjoyment playing his saxophone as he did  working the land.
First and foremost, Lyle was dedicated to The Church of Jesus Christ  of Latter-day Saints, and during his lifetime, gave countless hours  of leadership serving as a Counselor in a Bishopric, as a member of  the Taber Stake High Council, as the First Stake Executive Secretary  in the Taber Stake, as Bishop of the Barnwell Ward, as a wonderful  home teacher, and he also served in many other church callings.
Lyle will be remembered as a gentle man with great strength, always  punctual, a generous heart and a love for people, especially his  eternal wife Crystal and his loving family.
Relatives and friends are invited to meet with the family at The  Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Barnwell on Wednesday,  April 12, 2006 from 7:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., and again at the church  prior to the funeral service on Thursday, April 13, 2006 from 12:30  P.M. to 1:40 P.M.
The Funeral Service will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of  Latter-day Saints, Barnwell on Thursday, April 13, 2006 at 2:00 P.M.  with Bishop Eric Jensen conducting. Interment to follow in the  Barnwell Cemetery.
